Artist Statement

For this series, I wanted to showcase my old electric guitar. It's a simple instrument really. Six strings, three pickups, a stock bridge. Nothing magical about it at first glance. No, the magic happens in the hands of the artist. Just as in the visual arts (I'm a practicing photographer.) the magic comes through the voice of the artist. The sounds you can play, the potential, the rock and roll spirit, it all comes out through the wood and the grain, the pickups and the bridge. The steel strings glistening in the light, waiting for you to play your favorite song. As a visual artist, I'm drawn to the abstract, to the lines, to the shapes, to the patterns objects make on the world. I wanted to explore the guitar in this way, as a form and subject itself. The guitar is a hunk of wood, yes, but it's got a soul and a spirit too. I believe that every detail has a story to tell. Whether it’s the glint of sunlight on a water surface or the intricate patterns of a guitar, I aim to reveal the beauty that often goes unnoticed. This is a close up look at a guitar. It's a simple instrument really. One from which many dreams are made.

Bio

Hello, World!I'm CarolAddictions: coffee, Ramen noodles, spinning, and photography, but not in that order. Infatuated with mini roadside libraries. Recreating Hopper’s “Nighthawks” with my camera one late night greasy spoon diner at a time. Master at hailing a cab. Likes fish. Slightly afraid of mice. When I'm not out exploring my favorite photographic haunts, I hang my hat just outside of Austin, Texas. Hailing from New York City originally, my passion for experimentation and willingness to play with my compositions has given my work a bit of a signature style. Since my first show at Austin’s own Amy’s Ice Cream in 1992, my work has gone on to be exhibited in galleries and museums around the world, as well as included in publications and many sites on the web. I am an active contributor to the vibrant Austin-area art scene, sometimes speaking to artist groups and occasionally serving as a judge or mentor for local art clubs. I hope you can grab a refreshing beverage of choice, pull up a comfortable spot, and enjoy having a look at the work I share as I bring my imagination to life for you. As always, I thank you for stopping by.
