Artist Statement

My work explores the tension between beauty and boundaries—between nature’s exuberant expression and the systems that seek to contain, conceal, or define it. In my Pivoines and Peonies series, I reimagine the classical peony—an enduring symbol of femininity, sensuality, and transience—through a bold digital lens that both reveals and disrupts. These works are not mere floral portraits, but layered terrains where memory, identity, and resistance intersect.Through digital collage, saturated color, and compositional fragmentation, I fuse organic and artificial elements to evoke a visceral tension between allure and discomfort. Stylized human forms merge with botanical repetition, while mesh grids, barbed motifs, and neon hues act as conceptual veils—both seductive and obstructive. These visual interventions mirror emotional and cultural constraints, transforming the floral form into a metaphor for vulnerability under pressure, and beauty as both shield and site of struggle.Ultimately, my practice resists erasure and conformity. It is a celebration of complexity—where nature and artifice, fragility and defiance, coexist in vibrant, unruly harmony.

Bio

Modest & Furious is a visual artist whose work centers on digital collage and color-driven composition. A former scientist with a lifelong passion for visual arts, he brings a unique perspective shaped by analytical training and aesthetic sensibility. Art has long been a source of comfort and meaning in his life—early experiences wandering through Italian cities, where public ancient art adorned streets, squares, and churches, nurtured in him a deep sensitivity to beauty. These daily encounters with classical sculptures, frescoes, and architectural details gradually transformed aesthetic appreciation into a personal necessity.Since 2022, Modest & Furious has focused on digital painting, reimagining classical and botanical iconography—floral forms, feminine archetypes, mythological motifs—as vehicles for exploring themes of identity, constraint, and emotional resilience. Drawing from art history, digital aesthetics, and personal narrative, he creates layered works that juxtapose the seductive with the unsettling. Saturated palettes and symbolic interference—barriers, grids, or repetition—challenge viewers to reflect on the limits imposed on beauty, memory, and self-expression.At the heart of his practice is a sustained exploration of memory—its fragile architectures, elusive processes, and shared dimensions. He investigates how memories are formed, stored, and altered over time, and how individual recollections intertwine with collective ones, generating complex, overlapping narratives. He is particularly fascinated by the unconscious mechanisms that repress certain memories while preserving others, and how fragmented recollections can recombine into entirely new mental constructs.A further line of inquiry in his work addresses the influence of writing systems—especially evolving, non-human codes used in automated environments—on our cognitive frameworks and memory structures. He regards these languages as increasingly influential forces in shaping not just how we communicate, but how we remember.Through his art, Modest & Furious weaves together the personal and political, the poetic and the digital. This ongoing body of work is a tribute to vulnerable power—beauty that blooms even under surveillance, pressure, or erasure.
