Description

"Overachiever" was developed from a mahogany carving given to me by a friend, who got it from a doctor who treated disturbed patients. My friend thought I could give it a new life, and so I did. The raw wood base is cherry resting on an aluminum manufacturing form, and the center is surrounded with various machine patterns-the whole giving a slightly confused hand rising in victory....over what? And the parts are beautiful..... hopeful?

The image features a sculpture incorporating both organic and inorganic materials creating a balance between different textures and elements. A robust mahogany fist grips a wood machine gear, showcasing a blend of art and mechanics, while the base of the sculpture is crafted from a weathered raw cherry wood slab mounted on a scrap steel plate that conveys a sense of solidity. This sculpture is a mixed media piece that embodies the artist's exploration of environmental and industrial themes through the integration of wood, metal, and various found objects, creating a visually captivating and open-ended narrative. Mounted at an angle on a metal plate, the artwork exudes a mysterious and intriguing presence that draws the viewer in, challenging them to interpret the layers of meaning within. The combination of the rugged textures and the fusion of elements exemplifies the artist's skill in creating a unique piece with a rich and complex story.

Beginning as a painter in oils, and having always loved drawing, in my travels, I met a sculptor (Jasmine Saunders) who invited me to join her life drawing group in her studio. From her influence, I began to carve wood, and have never looked back! Sculpture is my first lov
