Artist Statement
Myriam Véjus, French artist-photographer born in Lyon on 01 April 1977 ‘Photography came into my life in 1993 during my 1st year of applied arts in Lyon. It was a passion that I practised in parallel with my profession as an interior decorator, which I began in 1999. 2018 saw a change of life and a change of direction, as I moved to Guadeloupe, FWI for three years of artistic wanderings, solitude and introspection, a long inner journey. Back in mainland France in 2021, I laid the foundations for the main thrust of my work and professionalised my art. I work with light, not so much for its visible luminosity and the interpretation we make of it through its reflection, but for its dimensions that are imperceptible to the naked eye, both in its spectrum and in its shadow zones, dimensions that I explore through different photographic techniques, with our human, animal and environmental nature as my subject. The dark side of luminosity as an exegesis of the soul, of a subject, a place, an environment, an exploration that takes me from wildlife photography to contemporary photography, via series of semi-abstract self-portraits and the exploration of shadow zones. There is no light without shadow, no shadow without light.there is no light without colour, no colour without light.shadow and light and its spectrum, the genesis of the material and the immaterial.my series ‘Dark Light’ is an immersion in the tropical forest of Basse-Terre, Guadeloupe, FWI.A work of shadow through the cursor of luminosity. A series of plants in monochrome, where light and shadow create matter, surface and volume, a sensibility inspired by the artist Pierre Soulages, ‘It's what I do that teaches me what I'm looking for’.My contemporary series, ‘Abrasion’, is a quest to extract the spectrum of white light, invisible to the naked eye, and revealing the profound identity of an environment. From the gold of Venice to the dominant violet of London, From the vibrant colours of Collioure (France) to the gentle transition to the Emerald Coast of Nantes (France), each place reveals its profound authenticity through its spectrum of light. A look inspired by the Fauvist school, with a Newtonian touch, through the phenomenon of light diffraction... From a face, a look, a person, or a place... Light is anima’.This series is available as a four-color print on transparent Plexiglas. This contemporary support, which faithfully retranscribes color and luminosity, itself becomes an additional lens, adding a slightdepth to the image.Light and color captured through a succession of lenses, with the viewer's diaphragm as the ultimate actor".
