Woodpecker Realm – Liminal Landscape 5

Woodpecker Realm is an impasto style original oil painting of an English summer landscape with a green woodpecker over a meadow. It is 36 x 24 inches. This painting was made ‘wet into wet’ method with plenty of thick oil paint. The place was East Chiltington in East Sussex at the beginning of September after a long hot summer. I came across the woodpecker whilst thrashing across this meadow towards the South Downs in the distance. I liked the way his colours harmonized with the colours of the last summer flowers and the dry grasses and brambles. This is partly why I painted the woodpecker to look as if he is merging from or into the landscape itself.
