TOY MUSEUM MUNICH - OLD TOWN HALL

The Toy Museum / Spielzeugmuseum in Munich, Germany, is located on the Marienplatz in the historic old town of the city.

Since 1983, a wonderful collection of European and American toys, collected by the Ivan Steiger family, has been exhibited in the Gothic Tower of the Old Town Hall / Altes Rathaus.

The collection contains the oldest toys made of wood and paper or lead and wax or porcelain, teddy bears, dolls, dollhouses, technical toy cars, airplanes, zeppelins, tin robots, and much more. The tower was part of the first town fortifications. A prison and torture chambers were based there, where traffic passes through the building today.

The building was first mentioned in 1310 as the seat of the city council, and the Old Town Hall and rooms of the tower are still used by the City of Munich and the Mayor for events and meetings.

After the Old Town Hall was almost completely destroyed in World War II, the building was reconstructed in the 1950s according to the original Gothic design of the former architect Jörg von Halsbach, named “Ganghofer,” who created the design after a lightning strike destroyed the building in 1460.
