Design a Wine Label for Purple Mouthed!
An open call for artists.
Purple Mouthed Past Wine Label Design
Deadline for entries: November 30, 2023
Let’s pop a bottle and celebrate our new partnership with Purple Mouthed, an all-things wine & spirits marketing & consulting service! Let’s pour a glass for this tasteful collaboration featuring a dangerously delicious and structured Tannat from Paso Robles, California.
Made by award-winning winemaker Josh Klapper, this label will be offered exclusively through one of New York’s top kosher wine retailers, Moishe Mayer. And we’re looking for the perfect artist to design a label to attract the senses of a rapidly growing fine kosher wine market.
THEME: Structure
Tannat is a grape most known for its solid structure.
Because the fruits are black and compact, we get a higher skin-to-juice ratio, creating a wine with deep coloring and big tannin. In addition, each grape contains around five seeds, as opposed to the usual two or three, contributing to an even higher tannin level than most.
Tannins are a critical component of a wine’s structure and texture while acting as a natural preservative that helps wine age and develop. They are responsible for the grip of a red wine, that drying sensation in your mouth that can cut through sweet, ripe fruit to create a well-balanced, structured sip that lingers long after you swallow.
IMPORTANT DETAILS:
We are looking for art that best depicts this idea of STRUCTURE for a luxury market (the final product will be sold for $80-$100 on the shelf; the design needs to reflect this premium price point). The image must be creative yet classy and personable yet poised while considering printing limitations: an overly complex design will not work. We need styles that are playful and imaginative with an ability to reprint boldly and stand out in a display case or on the shelf.
Submissions are being considered as examples of an artist's work: the winner will create a bespoke label in collaboration with Purple Mouthed and receive $1000, in addition to $250 per future reprint.
Do you think you have what it takes? We can’t wait to see - submit your best 2D work for a chance to win!
Submissions are limited to 2-D works of art in categories including Illustration, Graphic Design, Drawing, Painting Mixed Media, Printmaking, and Digital Art. We are looking for styles that are playful and imaginative, that would stand out clearly on a display case or store shelf, and with the ability to reprint boldly.

Kate KellyI attended Syracuse University and majored in French Literature, an experience that inspired me to start my first blog, FauxFrench.
While my writing career was beginning to develop, I worked as an illustration agent at Morgan Gaynin Inc., a premiere boutique agency in New York. Ten happy years were spent dedicated to representing our artists and connecting them with high profile projects in publishing, advertising, editorial, and more.
Since then, I have used my talents in various capacities, including research, journalism, curation, and education. My personal career highlights include being published in VICE Magazine (print and online) and working directly with the Royal Collection Trust and historian Dr. Amanda Foreman to curate the 2019 Buckingham Palace Summer Open.
I am thrilled to dive back into the art world as a curator for Artrepreneur and couldn't be more excited to connect with the diverse talent that's represented here.
